Book Summary
The Secret History tells the story of a group of young misfits: Richard, the protagonist and narrator; Henry, the esteemed leader and admired member of the group; Charles and Camila, extremely close twins with opposing personalities; Francis, a detached character from a background of wealth, and finally, Bunny, a cruel, sophisticated intellectual. These eccentric individuals are brought together by an exclusive ancient Greek program, taught by their charismatic professor.
Gradually, from what starts off as a somewhat innocent frienship, emerges an obsession of corruption, betrayal and immorality. An air of evil and murder is brought into light . The melodramatic plot line eases its way to the inevitable, terrible conclusion that is to come. This novel leaves each reader aghast with a clear portrait of both the banality and the complexity of evil.
"Beauty is rarely soft or consolatory. Quite the contrary. Genuine beauty is always quite alarming."
Is this book perfect for me?
This book is perfect for readers that love a dark, twisted, psychological thriller. A tale of murderous indulgences and mysterious phenomenons swirl a dark, grey mist throughout the pages of this novel, leaving a bittersweet aftertaste caused by inhumane characters, exploitation of morality and a pure presence of evil.
This book is also perfect for readers that enjoy the literary beauty of a modern classic. The Secret History is a stunning intertwinement of many 19th century authors, including Dostoyevsky, Scott Fitzgerald and Dickens; as this text contains such mesmerising style and poise that only the best pieces of classic literature possess.
“Love doesn't conquer everything. And whoever thinks it does is a fool."
